South Korea’s state-run utility company Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) has decided to charge for the use of its electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, which is currently free, in a move to seek new profit-generating business models.

The company said on Tuesday that it will begin paid services of its 1,560 EV charging units on July 13. The charging stations that have been installed across the country including at KEPCO office buildings, public parking spaces, large discount stores, and residential areas have been offered free of charge for electric car owners since January as part of test operations.

The company has set the charging price at between 83.6 won ($0.07) and 174.3 won per kilowatt-hour depending on charging hours for the use of charging stations in residential areas including apartments and villas.

The charging cost for the stations located in major discount stores and public parking spaces will be the same as that offered by charging stations run by the environment ministry.

Payment can be made without separate online subscription but with only credit card on site. Corporate members can also pay with their membership cards.

An unnamed KEPCO official expected the paid service to help upgrade the overall conditions of electric vehicle operations by allowing it to invest to improve EV charging infrastructure, and affordable charging fees would contribute to reducing pollution and developing related services.
