Korea’s Seoul Semiconductor unveils near-sun LED lighting

South Korea’s light-emitting diode (LED) producer Seoul Semiconductor Co. announced on Tuesday that it developed a new LED technology called SunLike with Japan’s Toshiba Materials Co. The self-explanatory technology is a lighting source close to solar spectrum.

The technology can be game-changing as it can grow plants under near-natural sunlight and can be most safe to the human eyes, said Lee Chung-hoon, chief executive of Seoul Semiconductor in introducing the new LED technology in Frankfurt in Germany on Monday (local time). The lighting systems using SunLike technology helps to see objects clearly as if they are under natural sunlight, claims Seoul Semiconductor.

Seoul Semiconductor’s new LED technology balances out red, green, and blue light in the best possible way to closely resemble solar spectrum. LED lights using SunLike emits less blue light that can be harmful to human body when exposed too long.

Global lighting system market is estimated at 100 trillion won ($88 billion), and LED lighting takes up nearly 40 percent of the total. Seoul Semiconductor hopes it can steal half of the LED share with its new natural lighting technology.

Shares of Seoul Semiconductor ended Tuesday at 21,650 won, up 600 won or 2.85 percent from the previous session.
