South Korean workers earned an average of 3.29 million won ($2,884) per month before tax as of 2015, with male workers paid 1.65 times more than their female counterparts, government data showed on Thursday.

According to data released by Statistics Korea, monthly salary of male workers averaged at 3.9 million won in 2015 while that of female employees came at 2.36 million won.

In further evidence of gender income disparity, 12.3 percent of men earned 6.5 million won or more a month, while such high-income earners came to only 3.0 percent for women. Men with monthly income of 850,000 won or less took up 2.4 percent, while the share was 6.6 percent for women.

Best paying job was the financial and insurance sector, paying 5.78 million won a month on average. Public utility enterprises came next with average pay of 5.46 million. Hospitality and dining employers paid the least with average wage at 1.73 million won.

By age group, employees in their 50s earned the most at 3.86 million won, followed by 40s with 3.83 million won, and 30s with 3.19 million won. Those aged 60 years or older earned 2.56 million won and 29 or younger 2.15 million won.
