Hyundai Motor Co. unveiled all-new subcompact crossover “Kona” on Tuesday, reinforcing its sport utility vehicle (SUV) fleet to boost its global presence by 2020.

Chung Euisun, vice chairman and the de facto heir to Hyundai Motor Group struggling with drooping sales at home and abroad, personally unveiled the automaker’s first subcompact SUV Kona at Hyundai Motor’s newly opened studio in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province on Tuesday.

Named after a district on the Big Island Hawaii famous for coffee, Kona is designed to stand apart from the automaker’s larger SUV models Tucson and Santa Fe. The height of the new SUV is lowered by 5 centimeters than that of typical compact SUVs but wider based on its “low and wide stance” design concept, according to the company.

Kona’s turbocharged gasoline engine model has a mileage of 12.8 kilometers (7.95 miles) per liter and the diesel engine model 16.8 kilometers (10.4 miles) per liter. They are 10 to 15 percent more fuel-efficient than others in the same class, claimed Hyundai Motor.

Kona will be sold around the world, starting in Korea later this month and followed by Europe in August and the United States in December. The company will offer 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine model and 1.6-liter diesel engine in Korea. In Europe, it will launch 1.0-liter and 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine units first and add 1.6-liter diesel engine unit next year. The company will market 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter gasoline engine models in North America.

The price is set at a range of 18,950,000 won ($16,792) and 24,550,000 won in Korea.

Shares of Hyundai Motor closed Tuesday at 164,500 won, up 2,000 won or 1.23 percent from the previous session.
