Location of Coral gas field in Mozambique

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries announced on Friday it has bagged a $2.5 billion deal to build a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility for a project on the Coral field, a natural gas field off Northern Mozambique in Africa. It marks the largest single offshore project deal signed this year for the shipbuilder. The contract remains effective until June 1, 2022.

The FLNG facility will be 439 meters long, 65 meters wide and 38.5 meters tall with a capacity to process 3.4 million metric tons of LNG per year.

Samsung Heavy Industries won the order together with its consortium partners, French Technip and Japanese JGC that are responsible for the detail design of the topside plant and purchasing of major equipment. Samsung Heavy Industries will be responsible for the entire processes for building the FLNG vessel from design to purchasing to manufacturing and the production design and manufacturing of the topside plant, which is $2.5 billion in total.

Samsung Heavy Industries is leading the market by clinching three out of four new orders for FLNG vessels placed worldwide this year.

The shipbuilder received a $3.6 billion order to build the world’s biggest FLNG vessel for a Prelude FLNG project from Shell in 2011, and a $1.5 billion order to build PFLNG-2 from Petronas in Malaysia in 2015. Samsung’s consortium partner was Technip for Prelude and JGC for PFLNG-2.

Samsung Heavy Industries has so far won 13 shipbuilding orders worth about 5.38 trillion won this year.

Shares of Samsung Heavy Industries finished at 12,050 won ($10.74), down 3.6 percent from the previous session.
