Chung Euisun, vice chairman and the de facto heir to Hyundai Motor Group struggling with drooping sales at home and abroad, will be personally unveiling the new compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) label Kona on June 13, according to company officials.

The move would be a rare one on home turf as he usually had presented new cars in overseas motor shows.

The country’s top automaker is planning to hold the presentation of its first compact SUV Kona at its newly opened studio in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province. The company lags behind local rivals in the compact SUV market. The new Kona would be pitted against market dominant Tivoli of Ssangyong Motor Co.

Its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. released the country’s first plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV) Niro, the Niro PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid), last month. It also released 2018 version of the compact SUV model Niro. The automaker so far had not been successful in its challenge against Tivoli. Kia Motors is also readying another small SUV Stonic by next month.

Hyundai Motor plans to roll out Kona in Europe and North America this summer.

Local demand for compact SUVs, which stood at around 12,000 units in 2013, surged to 107,000 units in 2016. Kona will be available at a price starting around 20 million won ($17,846).
