Handsome Co., fashion unit of South Korea’s leading retail company Hyundai Department Store Group, will strengthen appeal to 20s through SJSJ label.

Handsome will make SJSJ - a 20-year brand - younger and hip in affordable price range to reach out to the “coming of the age” group. It hopes to generate revenue of 100 billion won (89 million) in five years through the transition.

Handsome already has a proven record in breeding System into a leading fashion name in 25 years since the brand’s launch and SJSJ will be nurtured to become another top seller in the same manner, according to the company.

As part of efforts to enhance SJSJ’s brand awareness over the next five years, the company will seek collaboration with overseas fashion brands in the latter half of this year.

While Handsome’s best-known fashion brands target women in their late 20s or older, SJSJ is designed for younger women with weaker spending power. The company will release SJSJ’s new summer collection “Capsule” with 24 varieties with price tags up to 30 percent axed from current price tags on SJSJ clothes.

Handsome owns a large customer base of those who stay loyal to its brands as they get older. It hopes the latest project would help SJSJ attract young customers who can remain long-term patrons for Handsome’s other fashion labels Time, Mine, and System, said an unnamed fashion industry official.

Although the offline fashion industry in general has remained stagnant hit by the economic slowdown and the burgeoning online fashion sites in the recent years, SJSJ has been able to post a robust growth. It raked in nearly 70 billion in sales last year, up from 60 billion won in the previous year.
