Samsung unveils high-end porcelain refrigerator

Samsung Electronics Tuesday unveiled a new concept of a premium refrigerator made with porcelain materials. The latest refrigerator dubbed “Chef Collection Porcelain” uses no word of “refrigerator” in its model name to show its intent to create a niche in the premium kitchen lineup.

During a launching event held at the Horim Arts Center in southern Seoul, the tech giant said that porcelain materials had been used by royal families for a long time in Europe and Asia as they were recognized as the most ideal material to keep food as fresh as possible. “The material remains intact leaving no stain and smell,” the company said.

Samsung said its development team conducted numerous tests and completed a prototype with 27 step procedures for over 40 days.

The model comes with a price tag of 14.99 million won ($13,000) for 915-liter capacity.

Samsung Electronics said it will launch the model in Korea first and then consider marketing in North America and Europe. “We hope to bump up this year’s revenue from the premium refrigerator lineup by more than three times from a year ago,” said Choi Ik-soo, director of Samsung’s strategy marketing team for the living home appliance business group.
