South Korean President Moon Jae-in expressed regrets over Korea Employers Federation (KEF)’s criticism of his policy to switch contract jobs into full-time regular positions, his spokesperson said.

“The KEF is one of the main parties that caused the social polarization with temporary jobs and it should self-examine and be remorseful (before criticizing the government’s job creation policy),” Moon was quoted by his spokesperson Park Soo-hyun on Friday.

KEF Vice Chairman Kim Young-bae during a forum held on the previous day bashed the new government’s policy to convert temporary jobs to permanent ones, stating “if the government seeks the job switch in a uniform manner, it would only deepen the conflict between the labor and the management.”

The “statement without self-introspection” could lead to a conflict and furthermore drag down the government’s efforts for job creation, Moon expressed his fear. The new president has put the job creation as the number one priority in his economic pledges and pushed for converting the irregular workers to permanent employees in the public sector on top of creating new jobs.

The advisory committee for state affairs planning that also acts as a presidential transition team for Moon also criticized the KEF, stating the federation’s statement comes from a closed mindset originating from the corporate side only and it is severely misreading the new government’s policy.

In response to the government’s statements, the KEF said it was not opposing the conversion of irregular jobs to permanent ones but meant to stress on the idea that it is more important to narrow the wage gap between the large conglomerate and small- and medium-sized firms.
