South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co.’s new flagship Grandeur, known as Azera overseas, is near setting a milestone of selling 10,000 units for sixth straight month in May.
According to Hyundai Motor Sunday, the Grandeur IG has sold over 10,000 units from December to April, matching the record its predecessor Grandeur HG set from February to June 2011. If the new Grandeur sells over 10,000 units this month as well, it would become the nation’s first full-size sedan to be sold over 10,000 units for six months in a row.
The longest-ever bestseller was mid-sized sedan Avante that sold 10,000 units for 10 months from March to December in 2011.
Grandeur IG arrived at a time when drivers are opting for bigger wheels.
According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA), domestic shipments of full-size cars jumped 28 percent from a year earlier and midsize cars 12 percent. Sales of compact and mini cars, on the other hand, dropped 17 percent and 24 percent, respectively, over the same period.
The hybrid version also sold 1,045 units last month.
