LS Cable & System’s movable cable system expected to boost electric cargo shipping

LS Cable & System’s movable train cables
According to the company on Thursday, it has recently developed electric train power-feeding cables that can be repositioned unlike conventional fixed electric cables that often interfere with loading and unloading of cargo containers shipped by trains. This is the world’s first of its kind, the company claimed.
The company recently succeeded in test operation of the movable electric train power-supplying cable at Okcheon station in North Chungcheong province in Korea together with the state-run Korea Railroad Corporation, the company said.
LS Cable & System expected that the movable cable system that will enable easier handling of cargos would significantly improve overall competitiveness of railway shipping. Electrically-powered trains require less maintenance costs than do diesel trains and have three times more traction power allowing more cargo volume.
The latest development is an outcome of a government-led project in which LS Cable & System took part in to localize movable electric cables for cargo trains. LS Cable & System has worked with mid-sized engineering company Jaeyoung Tech Co. since April 2015 to jointly develop the system. It also transferred technology to its smaller supplier to promote shared growth.
