South Korean chipmakers Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc. together responsible for 74 percent of the global memory chip supplies have a solid growth outlook for the second quarter as prices of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips have kept strengthening streak and surged nearly 12 percent in just one month.

According to market researcher DRAMeXchange on Wednesday, the average contract price of 4-gigabit (Gb) DRAM DDR4 modules “512Mx8 2133MHz,” a benchmark for global DRAM price jumped 12.4 percent to $3.09 on April 28 from $2.75 recorded on March 31, 2017. The price kept upward momentum and more than doubled after it bottomed out from $1.31 set on June 30, 2016.

The price of NAND flash memory that is commonly used as storages medium for mobile devices such as smartphones has also continued to head upward. The average contract price of “128Gb 16Gx8 MLC” rose 1.7 percent to $5.51 in just one month and soared 57 percent from $3.51 recorded on April 29, 2016.

Samsung Electronics is responsible for about half of global DRAM supplies, and SK Hynix 25 percent. Also, they command a combined 47 percent share of global NAND flash memory market.

The global memory industry entered the so-called supercycle in semiconductors when prices jump on both tight supply and strong demand to suggest a lengthy boon.

Samsung Electronics in the first quarter earned record-high operating profit of 6.31 trillion won ($5.6 billion) from semiconductor operation and SK Hynix registered all-time high operating profit of 2.47 trillion won. They are expected to continue their stellar performance in the second quarter on memory chip price rally.
