South Korean companies who have high interests in deals with the United States are increasingly joining the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM).

According to sources from the business circle on Sunday, the nation’s largest steelmaker POSCO has recently joined the American business interest group. “We decided to join the AMCHAM to deal with the Trump administration’s trade protectionism more effectively and strengthen business networks in the U.S.,” said an official from the company.

Steel products are frequently subject to the U.S. government’s retaliatory imposition such as anti-dumping or countervailing tariffs. The U.S. President Donald Trump on April 20 officially ordered the Department of Commerce to conduct an investigation to see whether steel imports have a negative impact on the country’s national security.

Doosan Group who owns Doosan Bobcat Inc., a compact construction equipment maker in the U.S., also decided to join the American business lobby group. The company with annual sales amounting to 4 trillion won ($3.5 billion) is expected to benefit from the U.S. administration’s plan to increase infrastructure investment.

The country’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. also rejoined the AMCHAM in February this year after pulling out nine years ago. Many more Korean firms including large conglomerates who want to enter the U.S. market or have high exposure to the country have shown their interest in joining the group, according to sources.

The AMCHAM was founded in 1953 with an aim to expand investment and trade between Korea and the U.S. It has more than 700 member companies of which about 40 percent are multi-national corporations.
