Audi Volkswagen Korea, the Korean sales unit of German carmakers Volkswagen AG and Audi AG incurred a major operating loss last year as it had been banned from selling most of its existing models for violating local emission and documentation rules.

According to an audit report submitted to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) on Tuesday, the domestic distributor of the two German brands registered 226.2 billion won ($198 million) in operating loss for full 2016, compared with an operating profit of 47.2 billion won in 2015. Sales more than halved to 1.38 trillion won from 2.81 trillion won over the same period, and bottom line swung to a net loss of 4.9 billion won from a net profit of 32.2 billion won in 2015.

The local government banned the Korean unit from selling flagship models of the two German brands and revoked the certifications of 80 vehicle models belonging to the company in August last year on allegation that it had fabricated emissions reports in order to meet and obtain permission to sell their vehicles in Korea. The company has been on sales suspension since then.

Volkswagen sold 13,178 units last year, plunging 63.2 percent from 35,077 units in 2015, while Audi sold 16,718 units, down 48.6 percent from the previous year.
