Samsung Electronics Co. seeking to carve out a niche market in military and government sectors in North America and Europe has recruited a former Pentagon chief information officer (CIO) as advisor and vice president for its IT and mobile communications division.

According to the electronics industry Wednesday, Samsung Electronics named Terry Halvorsen, who served as CIO at the U.S. defense department from March 2015 to February this year, as vice president of its IT and mobile communications unit earlier this month. He is said to assume a role of advisor for Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung Electronics’ handset business.

The appointment of Mr. Halvorsen came at a time when the leading smartphone maker has been seeking chances to expand supply of its mobile devices to the U.S. defense department as part of efforts to break into niche markets in military and government sectors in North America and Europe.

An unnamed industry source expected that Mr. Halvorsen would play a key role in helping Samsung Electronics explore new business opportunities in military and government network security sectors, which require many security and stability tests.

The Korean tech giant has been supplying KNOX-enabled Galaxy smartphones to the U.S. defense department since 2014 and has supplied as many as 19 models of its mobile devices so far.
