South Korea’s tech giant Samsung Electronics reclaimed the top position in global smartphone market it had lost to its archrival Apple briefly in the fourth quarter amid the recall and discontinuation of Galaxy Note7 in the subsequent quarter, recent data showed.

According to market researcher TrendForce, Samsung Electronics shipped 80.1 million phones in the January-March period, up 8.4 percent from the previous quarter, to claim 26.1 percent of the global smartphone market. It outpaced Apple that commanded 16.9 percent.

In the fourth quarter of last year, Apple accounted for 20.3 percent of global sales as Samsung’s share slipped to 18.5 percent due to the debacle of the Galaxy Note7 whose fire-prone battery defect led to its discontinuation.

Samsung in the first quarter ramped up shipment of mid-end and budget phones to make up for its fallout in the premium league, TrendForce said in its report.

Global smartphone output for the first quarter of 2017 totaled 307 million units, a 23 percent drop from the previous quarter, largely due to a slowdown in Chinese smartphone brands.

Major brands including Samsung, its local rival LG and China’s leading smartphone manufacturer Huawei launched new versions to their flagship, but the market demand is expected to remain weak during the second quarter as consumers await arrival of the tenth anniversary iPhone in the third quarter.
