South Korea’s top game moguls NCSoft Corp. and Netmarble Games Corp. are going head-to-head with sequels of Lineage, the country’s first-ever multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) launched in September 1998 that has been enjoying immense popularity ever since.

According to multiple industry sources Monday, NCSoft on Wednesday will start to take preorders for its latest mobile game Lineage M that will be officially launched sometime in May or June.

The launch of Lineage M comes after Lineage 2: Revolution by Netmarble Games has become a huge hit since its market debut in December, drawing great attention from the game industry as the two games are based on the same original game.

The upcoming mobile role-playing game Lineage M by NCSoft is based on Lineage 1 whose accumulative revenue stands at 3 trillion won ($2.6 billion). It carries on with legacy of Lineage from characters and alliances to the theme in hopes of repeating the same success of its original online version.

Using intellectual property rights of Lineage 2, 3D version of Lineage 1, Netmarble Games launched Lineage 2: Revolution and wowed the market by raking in 206.5 billion won in revenue in the first month since its launch.

Netmarble Games earned IP rights for Lineage 2 from NCSoft after the two struck a stock swap agreement in February 2015 which helped the latter to fend off management intervention by Nexon Co. Netmarble acquired 8.9 shares of NCSoft.

An industry source expected Lineage M to keenly compete with Lineage 2: Revolution as soon as it joins the mobile game world before June.
