Galaxy S8 series are off to a strong start, drawing record 550,000 preorders in Korea in the first two days and raising hopes for its birth mission to restore credibility in trend-setting innovation for its maker Samsung Electronics following the ill fortune with its sibling Galaxy Note7.

According to the telecommunications industry Sunday, Galaxy S8 series - the S8 and larger-screen S8 Plus - attracted 550,000 preorders on Friday and Saturday, a stunning record when considering full 13-day preorder tally of 400,000 and first two-day record of 200,000 for Galaxy Note7. Its earlier version Galaxy S7 series had drawn 100,000 preorders in the first two days a year ago.

The initial response is mindboggling, said Samsung Electronics which had launched its newest premium phone with anxiety as the market has been closely watching its new innovation more with skepticism on hardware reliability following the disastrous debacle with its short-lived Galaxy Note7 after the highly popular phone had to be recalled, banned on flights, and removed from shelves for life after some of them caught fire.

The company expects the strong demand to continue given the positive responses from users in the experience zones that have been available in 3,000 phone retail outlets.

The news on top of its second largest-ever operating profit of near $9 billion in the first quarter sent Samsung Electronics shares up 0.6% to 2,093,000 won ($1,833) as of 1:30 p.m. Monday in Seoul trading.
