South Korea’s two biggest car makers Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. that plan to recall more than 170,000 cars in the country are also considering a recall of 1.3 million units in the United States due to Theta 2 engine defects.

Hyundai Motor said on Friday that it is in talks with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to recall about 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. due to the engine issues. The cars subject to the recall are Hyundai’s Sonata (YFa) and Santafe (AN), and Kia’s K5 (QF), Sorento (XMa) and Sportage (SL) models.

In the U.S. and Canada, the unevenly-processed surface of an engine component called crankshaft pin caused serious noise and vibration, according to sources.

Hyundai Motor said the cars subject to the recall in Korea have different engine problems. “The cars in Korea were found to have dirt in the crankshaft’s oil feed holes,” the company said.

In September 2015, the automaker recalled cars equipped with Theta 2 engines in the U.S. as well, but it was also because of a different reason. “The 2015 recall was caused by the U.S. engine manufacturing facility’s failed contamination control,” the firm added.

The recall in Korea will initiate on May 22 and the exact schedule of the recall in the U.S. has not been decided yet.

“We will examine whether the engines cause problems such as noise and exchange faulty engines,” the automaker said. “If the recall plan is confirmed in the U.S., similar steps will be taken.”

Shares of Hyundai Motor closed Friday at 144,500 won, down 2.36 percent or 3,500 won from the previous session.
