Domestic sales by South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. grew in March despite overall depressed car sales thanks to its face-lifted midsized sedan Sonata New Rise.

The automaker said Monday its steady selling Sonata sedan sold 7,578 units, up 7.4 percent on year and a whopping 70.7 percent on month after the release of its facelift version. Sonata became the country’s second best-selling car in March for the first time this year following Grandeur, which has remained top-seller in Korea for four months in a row with total shipments of its old and new models reaching 13,358 units.

Hyundai Motor’s March sales rose 2.6 percent on year reaching 63,765 units.

Its sister company Kia Motors Corp. saw its monthly shipments last month drop 5.7 percent from a year earlier as its mainstay models including the Pride and K3 sedans and Sportage and Sorrento sport utility vehicles (SUVs) became outmoded.

GM Korea Co. performed worst last month with sales dropping12.4 percent due to lackluster response to Chevrolet Cruze that sold a mere 2,147 units despite a discount offer worth up to 2 million won ($1,782.2).

Renault Samsung Motors Co. and Ssangyong Motor Co., registered 2.7 percent and 1.8 percent respective gains in domestic shipments in March.

Combined sales of Korea’s five major automakers - Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, GM Korea, Renault Samsung Motors and Ssangyong Motor - totaled 733,274 units at home and abroad in March, down 7.7 percent from 794,868 units sold in the same month last year.

In the domestic market, the five carmakers delivered a combined 145,903 cars last month, down 2.0 percent from a year earlier.
