South Korea’s largest auto parts supplier Hyundai Mobis Co. said Thursday that it has begun production of self-developed Integrated Body Unit (IBU), a computing control unit that can command four electric systems in a driving vehicle.

Hyundai Mobis, parts unit of Hyundai Motor Group said Wednesday, said it has begun mass-production of the integrated body units from its Jincheon Factory at Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province, about 62 miles southwest of Seoul.

The body unit controls four electronic systems - body control module, smart key system, tire pressuring monitoring system and parking assist system. Apart from Continental of Germany and Hyundai Mobis, no others have mastered the multi-control unit technology to go into commercialization.

When four electronic modules are combined into one, the car maker can save not only production cost but also make their cars lighter. An integrated unit can reduce weight by 60 percent, size by 50 percent, and production cost by 40 percent, the company said.
