Hanwha Q Cells Co., a solar power unit of South Korea’s conglomerate Hanwha Group, clinched a 1.5 trillion won ($1.33 billion) deal to build the largest solar power plant in Turkey, cementing its top position in the country’s solar power market.

According to Hanwha Group on Tuesday, a consortium led by Hanwha Q Cells and Turkish conglomerate Kalyon Energy was selected as the contractor to build 1 gigawatts (GW) solar power plant in Karapinar in the Central Anatolian Konya province, Turkey. The plant, which is enough to power about 300,000 households for a year, will run up to 30 years.

The consortium formed by Hanwha and Kalyon Energy with a 50 percent stake each won the project by offering the lowest unit price of 0.0699 dollar per kilowatt-hour. In the next 21 months, the consortium plans to manufacture photovoltaic (PV) modules in Turkey that will be used in building the 1 GW solar power farm.

Hanwha Q Cells has become a dominant player in the Turkish solar power market after completing a 10 MW solar power plant last year and an 8.3 MW solar power farm in 2015 in the European country. Chinese rivals are fiercely competing against the Korean solar power company in the country.
