South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. will install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at parking lots of its 16 workplaces across the nation by the end of this year, a project that will be subsidized by the government.
LG Electronics announced on Tuesday that it signed an agreement with the Ministry of Environment to participate in the government’s campaign to expand EV charging infrastructure in the country at its campus of vehicle components division in Incheon on Monday.
이미지 확대 Under the agreement, the ministry will subsidize of up to 4 million won ($3,483) for installing one charging unit per 100 parking spaces. The 16 buildings can house a combined 11,000 cars, which mean they will be fitted with more than a hundred charging ports.
Employees can charge for free.
By shifting to an EV, a worker commuting 86 kilometers (53 miles) per day can save 2.38 million won ($2,077) in annual gasoline bill or 1.51 million won in diesel fuel.
“Workplaces are second to homes where people spend most time in. EV proliferation will pick up if cars can be easily and cheaply charged while working,” Lee Chung-seop, vice minister of Environment.
The government will expand the campaign in other large corporate workplaces.
