South Korea’s second largest automaker Kia Motors Corp. will introduce its new fastback sedan Stinger whose top-of-the-line model is capable of hitting 0-60 miles per hour (mph) in a mere 5.1 seconds at a price in the 50 million won ($44,150) range at home in May.

According to a senior Kia official Thursday, the real-wheel-drive sedan built on the Gran Turisomo (GT) concept that was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011 will hit the local market in the spring with a price tag of 55 million won for the range-topping 3.3 liter-engine twin-turbo V6 engine. It only takes 5.1 seconds for the model to reach 60 miles per hour and 6 seconds for the model equipped with a 2 .0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is to be sold at 42 million won.

Kia’s Stinger has edges in price and size over its foreign rivals’ sports sedans, said Kim Pil-soo, an automotive engineering professor at Daelim University. He said the biggest challenge for the new sports sedan is whether it can compete with import brands with long-time established upscale image. The local sports sedan market is largely dominated by foreign brand cars such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

The Korean automaker targets both younger and mid-aged buyers with its new fastback sedan, which sports both sleek design and roomy space. With growing popularity of high-performance cars among Korean drivers, its sister company Hyundai Motor Co.’s luxury brand Genesis’ G80 Sports has sold about 200 units on average every month since its launch in November.
