Samsung Electronics Co. is working to open its first home appliance factory in the first half of next year at an initial cost of around $260.

According to insider sources, the South Korean tech giant is currently discussing its factory expansion plan with governments of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Ohio at an initial budget of between $250 million to $270 million.

It is reported to be most keen on Blythewood in South Carolina because of the location’s accessibility to both sea and land transportations. Global manufacturers including BMW and General Electric have manufacturing plants in South Carolina.

“We are still weighing over multiple choices,” a senior official said. Samsung Electronics recently met with Alabama government authorities.

Its U.S plant will mainly roll out washers, which are most vulnerable to antidumping charges from its U.S. rival Whirlpool. It could also turn out refrigerators and ovens.

Samsung Electronics will embark construction within the year with an aim to start operation from the first half of next year. To save time and cost, it will buy existing manufacturing facility instead of building it from the scratch. Samsung will pitch that the new factory would make more than 600 jobs.

Before its formal announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump who openly threatens multinational and American companies with heavy tariffs for goods made outside the country to help increase jobs and growth for the U.S. last month in his tweet “thanked” Samsung for bringing in a new factory in the U.S.
