Samsung Electronics launches dual-load washing system FlexWash

Samsung Electronics, South Korea’s top home appliance manufacturer, has launched a new front-load washing machine named FlexWash that comes with a smaller washer on its top, hoping to steal the high-end washer market led by its local rival LG Electronics. The FlexWash was first unveiled at CES 2017 in Las Vegas in January.

Critics call it a copycat of rival LG’s dual-load washing system launched in 2015 under the trademark of TWINWash. LG’s front-load washing machine has a smaller top loader on its bottom.

But Samsung Electronics claims its FlexWash is an evolution Samsung’s ActiveWash that conceptualized separate washing in a single machine, and “the culmination of the company’s long-lasting commitment to users,” according to Seo Byung-sam, vice president of Samsung’s home appliance unit, Thursday.

The ergonomically designed FlexWash consists of a top-load tube on the top and a front-load tube on the bottom, allowing users to avoid bending frequently when they wash small loads of laundry. The top loader has a boil-wash function and the front loader has a dryer. The latter also features a small window for an added load of clothes or detergents.

The FlexWash also has smart features that allow the artificial intelligence system to detect a possible system failure in advance and inform users of how to respond based on data collected through sensors. Samsung Electronics expects the AI system to reduce the number of home visits by maintenance technicians by about 35 percent.
