South Korea’s chicken franchise group Genesis BBQ will open 10,000 stores in the United State and 50,000 stores across the world over the next four years with the ambitious goal of outranking McDonald’s to become the world’s top fast-food franchising brand, said Genesis BBQ Group Chairman Yoon Hong-geun.

“America may be the home of fried chicken, but BBQ is better than KFC in terms its menu choices (of 1,500) and expansion pace,” Yoon said in a ceremony opening a new store in Manhattan, New York on Thursday (local time).

BBQ entered the U.S. market in 2007 but faced a series of lawsuits filed by its stores which brought down the number of stores to 30 from 120. “We couldn’t avoid lawsuits although we signed a so-called master franchise contract with a local firm,” said Yoon. “We will operate the U.S. business by opening chain stores, not franchises.”

BBQ will expand its partnership with American retail food chains such as Kroger, ShopRite and H-Mart to reinforce its U.S. business. “We will open more than 5,000 stores by joining hands with American supermarkets,” said Yoon.

BBQ started its overseas business in China in 2003 and has signed master franchise agreements with 57 countries. Now it has its operation in more than 30 countries around the globe.
