South Korea’s largest steelmaker Posco Chairman Kwon Oh-joon pledged to commit the next three years in his term to complete full automation in steelmaking facilities in the country and bolster non-steel operations.

The extension of his term was finalized in the company’s 49th shareholders’ meeting held at Posco Center, Seoul on Friday.

“We’ll apply big data, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence to stay ahead in the fourth industrial revolution and help to lower production cost and maximize quality,” Kwon told shareholders.

The market conditions are unfavorable due to slow-moving domestic economy, rising commodity prices, and increased protectionist policies in global markets, he said.

But the steelmaker will combat the challenges through cost-cutting efforts and new growth development, he said.

Kwon was retained in office for his achievement for strengthening competitiveness and balance sheet of the steelmaker over the last three years.

He pleaded for another term during the board meeting in January so that he can complete the restructuring campaign he initiated and strengthen non-steel operations such as rechargeable battery materials for new growth.
