Hanwha Q Cells Co., a solar power unit of South Korea’s conglomerate Hanwha Group, opened a new research and development center in the country that will aid in mass producing advanced photovoltaic (PV) modules that are expected to generate higher profits within this year.

According to an official at Hanwha who declined to be named on Thursday, the company has completed a research and development facility in the city of Eumseong, Chungbuk, south of Seoul, and the local research lab will receive proprietary technology developed by Hanwha Q Cells’ global R&D center in Germany for local production of more cost effective and robust products like half cells and glass-to-glass modules this year.

Half cells are designed to improve performance over cost with reduced cell resistance that increases in proportion to its size. Laser is used to accurately cut a produced cell by half. Data show Hanwha’s half cells will up power output by roughly 3 percent compared to conventional PV cells.

Glass-to-glass modules use reinforced glass for their back cover instead of plastic to weather hot and humid conditions, allowing power generation to endure for 30 years, five years longer than the lifetime of the module with the plastic back cover.

Improved durability is expected to allow Hanhwa Q Cell to tap into unexplored overseas market like challenging desert areas, the official said, adding “Half cells and glass-to-glass modules will be rolled out from the end of this year and their sales will be reflected in the financial statements from next year.”

The company also expects its profit margins will bounce back once mass production of the high value added products begins.
