Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea’s tech behemoth under new management policy of independence from the group following the arrest of its vice chairman and group’s de factor leader Jay Y. Lee will significantly increase new hires this year.

According to a senior official at Samsung Electronics who declined to be named on Monday, the tech giant will seek a larger number of entry-level employees in the first half of this year. With its Vice Chairman Lee behind bars, many have suspected that the company and other units of Samsung Group would remain refrained from hiring new workers. The official added that the company will mainly look for those who can contribute to the growth of its future growth engines including in the area of software development, as well as semiconductor and display units that the company has recently increased investment.

Samsung’s latest decision to expand its recruitment program reportedly came from Lee, who was arrested for his alleged role in a corruption scandal involving Korea’s impeached President Park Geun-hye. Lee had ordered the company to hire new workers without any delay amid intensifying competition in the industry with rapid changes in the technology trends.

Samsung Group companies have not disclosed the exact number of its new recruitment since 2012, but it has been known that the number of new hires across the group affiliates in the first half of each generally reaches about 4,000 and 10,000 in the second half. By June this year, Samsung Electronics is expected to hire 1,000 more workers compared to last year.
