Korea’s agri-food sector frets dent in exports to China over THAAD

South Korean agriculture, fisheries, livestock, fresh as well as processed food industry has become jittery about shipments to China amid Beijing’s heightened economic retaliation for Korea’s deployment of U.S. missile-defense system Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD).

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on Wednesday, Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co.’s shipment was turned away by Chinese customs authorities finding fault with documental presentations.

The food industry fears spread of sanctions currently restricted to Lotte companies and brands following the group’s surrender of land for THAAD battery.

Of 12 food exporters, four said they confronted tougher customs and quarantine actions from Chinese authorities.

The ministry said it was keeping a close eye on “worrisome” changes on the export front from next month.

Agri-food exports to China made up 17 percent of Korean overseas shipment in the field, second after Japan’s 19 percent. Over 850 companies export food to China.
