Hong Ra-hee, one of the most influential figures in the Korean art scene, and the wife of Lee Kun-hee, the bed-ridden chairman of Samsung Electronics, has resigned as director of Samsung Museum of Art, better known as Leeum, for unspecified personal reasons, the museum said Monday.

Simultaneously, she stepped down from the directorship of the Ho-Am Art Museum, a private museum that houses art pieces collected by Samsung founder Lee Byung-chull.

Hong, 72, appeared to resign because of the arrest of her son, Lee Jae-yong, the de facto leader of Samsung Group, and the dismantling of the group’s policy function that controlled Samsung affiliates last week.

She took the top job at Leeum in October 2004 when it opened. In 2008, she left Leeum amid prosecutors` investigation into a slush fund scandal at Samsung but returned to her job in March 2011.

Her second return to the organizations won’t be easy this time given current negative sentiment towards the family-controlled conglomerate.

Hong graduated from Seoul National University, majoring in applied arts, had played a central role in the Korean art community for many years.
