Korean discount retailer Emart targets $90mn in exports for 2018

Emart Inc., South Korea’s big-box store unit of Shinsegae Group, will go more aggressive on the foreign front by targeting overseas revenue of over 100 billion won ($86.5 million) by next year, nearly doubling from this year’s estimated 53 billion won.

The retailer will aim to up revenue by 65 percent this year from last year and again nearly double its shipment next year.

It will increase export destinations to 20 countries, doubling from last year’s 10.

Emart began exports to the Philippines in January and will ship to Japan in March, the U.K. in April, followed up by Thailand and Taiwan.

The company is pursuing export deals in Uzbekistan, Russia and the Netherlands in the second half, said Shim Jin-bo, head of sales operation at Emart.

Emart became the first certified trading company among local retailers.

It exported 32 billion won in consumer goods to overseas last year, up sharply from 8.1 billion won in 2015.
