Unfazed by inaccessibility to China, the world’s fastest growing and largest electric vehicle market, South Korea’s SK Innovation Co. will double the capacity for EV batteries with strong bet on fast global transition to next-generation fuel and motor vehicle system.

According to the company on Monday, its board of directors approved the plan to construct two additional EV battery production lines that will churn out EV cells with a combined 2 gigawatt hour (GWh) to up the company’s total battery capacity to 3.9GWh capable of powering 140,000 EVs a year after completion.

The conglomerate accelerated its expansion plan for the second plant in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province. It will not only expand capacity in the first plant but also in the second that begins commercial operation from the second half of next year.

The new plant would be fully automated running on machines, big data and central control system. The smart factory with 40,000 square meters of space is larger than four soccer fields.

The aggressive expansion is to keep up with the fast growth in demand. The company claims it has enough orders to keep the facilities running for the next seven years. The entire output from the ramped-up facility would go to German automaker Daimler Benz.
