South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. created a product control and oversight office to ensure it does not repeat the defect crisis that led to discontinuation of Galaxy Note7.

Samsung Electronics announced Thursday that it organized a new quality control team to oversee the entire production process at production lines of electronics devices and appliances under the head of Kim Jong-ho, former president and director of Samsung Heavy Industries Co.’s production division.

Since the debacle with fire-prone Galaxy Note7 that brought about disgrace to the company’s hard-won reputation as a global hardware maker, Samsung Electronics has been studying to innovate and strengthen quality control.

Kim has spent his entire career on factory management. He played a critical role in establishing production system in 30 overseas factories of Samsung Electronics. He contributed to smooth transition to metal from plastic framework for mainstay Galaxy phones from 2014 by coming up with the idea of installing defect measurement apparatus in the Vietnamese lines.

Kim was the second appointment in Samsung Group’s annual executive reshuffle that has been delayed due to its alleged implication in the power abuse scandal involving the impeached President Park Geun-hye and her friend Choi Soon-sil.

Samsung Group earlier announced dismantlement of Future Strategy Office in charge with group-wide management decisions to allow greater management independence and accountability in individual companies. Executive-level appointments from now on are expected to come at individual company level.
