Samsung SDI Co., a battery making unit of South Korea’s largest conglomerate Samsung Group, said it is now responsible for powering the world’s largest energy storage system (ESS) in California.

Samsung SDI supplied 400,000 units of batteries in 24 containers for the ESS facility with ultimate goal of providing total capacity of 350 megawatt hour (MWh) in Escondido, California, the company said Sunday. Its packages would provide for 240MWh or 70 percent of the total ESS capacity that can power 40,000 U.S. households for four hours. No other company in the world has provided a single power unit of 240MWh, the company added.

The ESS facility is to store surplus power produced in gas and solar power plants and use it when power demand surges. It also cuts carbon emission.

The deal has secured Samsung SDI safe footing in the U.S. market where safety is highly prioritized. Samsung SDI is the global leader in ESS market with a market share of 18 percent as of 2015.

According to the U.S. market research company Navigant Research, the global market for lithium-ion batteries will grow 60 percent a year on average to 14.8 gigawatt hour (GWh) in 2020 from 2.3GWh in 2016. The U.S. will lead the global ESS market with 4.2GWh by 2020 from 590 MWh in 2016.

At 12:24 p.m., shares of Samsung SDI rose 2 percent or 2,500 won to 127,500 won in Seoul trading Monday.
