LG Electronics Inc. will build a 74,000-square-meter home appliances manufacturing plant in Tennessee, the United States.

The Korean electronics giant announced on Wednesday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the State of Tennessee on Tuesday to construct a plant that will initially roll out washing machines starting 2019 in Clarksville.

LG Electronics will promote the new factory as a manufacturing hub in the U.S. by expanding production for other home appliances. It also plans to apply factory automation solutions to the facility to maximize its productivity. The project is expected to create at least 600 full-time jobs in Tennessee, the company said.

“LG is proud to make further investments in America, to create jobs and to bring state-of-the-art home appliance production technology to the great state of Tennessee,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics’ Home Appliance & Air Solution (H&A) division.

The new Tennessee plant is expected to cover the company’s entire production for the U.S. market and its Mexican plant would be reassigned to manufacture products geared to Latin American markets, in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of hefty tariffs on products imported from Mexico.
