The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) has arranged visits to Washington to meet with members of the new administration under President Donald Trump and legislative in May in hopes to campaign in favor for South Korea in lieu of the Seoul government dysfunctional from impeached president and legislative preoccupied with impeachment trial and presidential election.

The delegation will include Hyundai Motor and one or two Korean household corporate names that are expected to join the AMCHAM, a senior AMCHAM official said. The visit is scheduled for May 15.

Korea has not been able to build connections with the unorthodox administration of Trump that outright pursues protectionist policy in trade and immigration to promote U.S. business interests and jobs because of the impasse from the prosecution probe and impeachment trial on President Park Geun-hye. The largest corporate representative group Federation of Korean Industries also lost face and most of its major members after it became implicated in the power abuse scandal of the president.

Since 1985, a delegation from the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) has visited Washington D.C. and on some occasions, New York, and other cities every year to meet with senior officials and policymakers to inform and discuss issues affecting U.S. companies doing business in Korea. These visits, also known as “Doorknock,” are designed to draw policymakers’ attention on the relationship between Korea and the U.S. and highlight issues in bilateral trade and investment. Last year, it served as a platform between the two countries to discuss measures to increase foreign direct investment and issues regarding Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
