The South Korean unit of McDonald’s Corp. will open 20 to 40 company stores this year and add more self-order kiosks to maintain presence in the market mushrooming with home-grown gourmet burger bistros and diners.

“We are not in a rush to find the best possible partner,” said Joh Joo-yun, president of McDonald’s Korea, in an interview with the Maeil Business Newspaper. The burger chain with 440 outlets including 130 franchise stores won’t be increasing franchise while it is in search for a strategic partner.

McDonald’s Korea has been seeking a strategic partner in Korea since last year for options including a master franchise that gives away franchise operation rights and receive royalty in return to oversee stores or going into a joint business partnership with a local enterprise.

Household foreign fast-food chain has been struggling in Korea in heated competition with strong local breeds.

She denied the company was looking for a strategic partner because it was under financial strain. The Korean operation has seen sales growth in double-digits over the last five years, she maintained.

Her focus for this year is so-called “McDonald’s of the future,” new high-tech outlets with open kitchens and self-service kiosks. Of the 440 outlets in Korea, 170 stores are changed into the tech-savvy stores. Eighty more will be turned to such outlets this year. Starting March, employees across McDonald’s outlets in Korea will be wearing T-shirts and jeans for their work outfits.

Joh, who took office last March, is the first Korean chief executive to head the Korean operation of McDonald’s. Formerly, she was the Director of Strategy at Motorola Mobile Devices at Motorola, Inc. U.S. headquarters.
