Applied Materials Inc., the world`s largest maker of semiconductor and display equipment, raised revenue of $2.2 billion in Korea last year largely thanks to aggressive expansion by Korean chip and display makers amid rebound in global prices.

According to Applied Materials Korea (AMK), it recorded its largest-ever sales in its 28-year operation in Korea.

Its revenue soared from expansion by Korean technology manufacturers. Its clients are the world’s two largest memory chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix and panel majors LG Display and Samsung Display. Recovery in demand and prices of chips and panels has turned Korean companies aggressive in capital investment to stay ahead in the cutting-edge industry.

Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display last year made facility investment of 27 trillion won ($23.8 billion) and their expansion leads to increase in equipment demand. The two have yet to pledge expansion plans for this year, but will likely be equally big given market conditions.

According to Market researcher IC Insights, Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor division is expected to post $56.8 billion sales this year, nearing Intel’s $61.2 billion. It is expected to keep up aggressive expansion until it reaches the peak of semiconductor industry.

The demand has also helped other local equipment suppliers. Domestic companies SEMES and SFA Engineering Corporation are estimated to have recorded sales of more than 1 trillion won last year.
