Newborns were fewest and deaths largest in South Korea last year in latest gloomy data underscoring the demographic realities of fast graying society with thinning young people.

According to data from the Statistics Korea Wednesday, the number of newborn babies in 2016 totaled 406,300, down 7.3 percent from 438,400 from a year earlier and the lowest tally since the data was tracked from 1970.

The number of births per 1,000 people dropped 8.1 percent from a year earlier to reach an all-time low of 7.9.

Moreover, the total fertility rate, or the number of babies that a woman is expected to have during her lifetime, slipped to 1.17 last year from 1.24 in 2015.

Birth from the age of 35 or higher increased, bumping up the share to 26.3 percent 23.9 percent a year ago. The average age of giving birth was 32.4, up 0.2 from a year ago.

Death toll also accelerated as the result of increasing population of senior citizens. Death count rose 1.8 percent to 281,000 last year, the largest deaths since the data was followed from 1983. Deaths were largest in the age of 80 or higher as people live longer today.
