South Korea’s biggest online portal operator Naver Corp. will put its self-driving car on the roads for test run.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on Monday that it issued a permit for the road test of an autonomous vehicle developed by Naver’s research and development subsidiary Naver Labs, making it the 13th car that has received the government permission since February last year.

Naver has become the country’s first tech company to join the race for developing autonomous cars that was led by auto makers such as Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. and Seoul National University. An IT company leading the way in self-driving vehicle is common in overseas.

The Korean government is amending regulations and supporting infrastructure in hopes to commercialize Level 3 self driving by 2020. Level 3 autonomous driving requires human drivers at the driver’s seat while the car takes control most of the time.

This year, it will allow expressway for autonomous driving before opening the K-City, a test bed where the entire roads can be run by self-driving cars.
