Hyundai Steel Company said on Tuesday it has independently developed an ‘EH47’ thick steel plate resistant to crack formation.

The rolled steel plate is mainly used for building a large container vessel and was recently certified by the Korean Register of Shipping (KR), a non-profit ship classification society, as brittle crack arrest (BCA) steel.

Steel materials have become thicker amid the enlargement of container ships, but a crack can grow on a steel structure and lead to major safety issue. To ensure structural safety, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) created a rule to make it compulsory to use BCA steel for large container ships contracted after 2014.

Hyundai Steel began the development of a thick steel plate in compliance with the international criteria in 2014 and developed EH47 steel materials using its own technology..

Hyundai Steel plans to receive certification for the new steel product from eight foreign classification societies in Norway, Germany, the USA, the UK and France by the end of June.

Hyundai Steel said it has formed a system to provide steel materials for large container vessels that meet the requirements in all areas of the world with the BCA certification.
