Three Korean furniture surfacing film makers last year accounted for over 30 percent of the global share, beating Japanese brands for the first time.

According to construction materials industry sources on Monday, LG Hausys, Hanwha L&C, and Toray Chemical Korea together were responsible for over 30 percent in global furniture surfacing file sales last year.

The surface films are covers for engineered woods, such as medium-density fiberboard and particle boards, used on furniture to enhance decorative features with various colors and patterns.

Until recently, the international furniture surfacing film market was dominated by Japanese names like C.I. Kasei Co. LG Hausys upped its share in the global market to 10 percent last year from 7 percent in 2015, according to the company. The rise in the company’s market share comes after its products met the strict environmental standards in the European Union.

Toray Chemical Korea is estimated to command nearly 30 percent share in the European market with its products sold under the name “Miolze.” Hanwha L&C that has made a foray into the European market earlier than its Korean peers is believed to be accountable for more than 10 percent in the global furniture surfacing film market. It also aims to further raise its share to 25 percent by introducing more diverse products and beefing up its subsidiary in Europe.
