Audi Volkswagen Korea, the Korean unit of German carmakers Volkswagen AG and Audi AG, appointed Marcus Hellmann, an executive who had been in charge of handling diesel emissions scandal at the German headquarters, as the co-head of the office in Korea where it has seen a sharp drop in sales following sale ban and registration cancellation of its cars.

The German automaker announced Sunday that it named Hellmann as the co-managing director of Audi Volkswagen Korea to lead the legal affairs at the Seoul office. The incumbent managing director, Johannes Thammer, will remain at his post as the co-head and assume the overall management including sales and marketing in Korea.

Hellmann until very recently had administered the follow-ups on the German automaker’s diesel emissions scandal at the German headquarters. His appointment to the Seoul position comes at a time when the company is seeking to regain consumers’ trust on its vehicles in the country after the Korean government last year banned and revoked certificates of Audi and Volkswagen vehicles for falsifying documents in applying for the cars sold in the country.

Audi Volkswagen Korea in February 6 launched a recall program for 27,000 units of Tiguan sport utility vehicles sold in the country after it received Seoul government’s approval for its recall plan in 14 months after the government first discovered the firm had manipulated emissions tests. Apart from the recall program, the automaker also is seeking to re-register 83,000 vehicles whose certificates were revoked and banned from sale last year for fiddling documents to circumvent emissions testing.
