Hyundai Motor Co. is mulling “Kona” as the name of its new compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) slated for launch at home late June at the earliest, according to sources on Tuesday.

Kona is the name of a district on the Big Island Hawaii famous for coffee. The upcoming compact SUV, which has been codenamed “OS,” will be competing with Ssangyong Motor Co.’s Tivoli, Renault Samsung Motors Co.’s QM3 and GM Korea Co.’s Chevrolet Trax that have been popular among young drivers in the country.

It is not the first time that Korea’s largest automaker named a car after famous location in a move to avoid any controversies over vehicle names provoking negative reactions from people in different countries due to various cultural and historical meanings of each word.

Just to name a few, the Santa Fe, Hyundai Motor’s flagship midsize SUV, is the capital of the state of New Mexico. The Tucson, its popular compact SUV, bears the name of a city and the county seat of Pima County, Arizona. Its discontinued compact sports coupe Tiburon is originally a name for an incorporated town in Marin County, California, which also means shark in Spanish.
