South Korea’s largest Hyundai Motor Co. together with its smaller sibling Kia Motors Corp. maintained the fifth place in global rank in terms of sales, but slipped further away from the front-running group with its performance hurt by deteriorating external and domestic demand and strike interruption in production.

According to the auto industry Sunday, Hyundai and Kia shipped combined 7,876,000 units across the globe, down 1.7 percent from a year earlier. The figure was shy of its initial goal of 8.13 million units and fell below the 8 million threshold for the first time in three years.

The automaking group last year struggled with sluggish demand in emerging economies and lengthy strike.

Volkswagen AG became the world’s best-selling automaker in 2016, outpacing Toyota Motor Corp. despite emissions-rigging scandal thanks to its predominance in the Chinese market Sales rose 12.2 percent on year to make up 38.6 percent of its total sales of 10,312,400 cars in 2016.

Toyota Motor slipped below the top rank for the first time in four years due to tumble in the U.S. market.

General Motors Co. came in third, unchanged from the previous year, shipping a total of 9,965,238 units, up 1.3 percent on year. China drove its sales, accounting for a third of its total sales.

Renault-Nissan Alliance trailed closely with a combined shipment of 9,961,347 units. Renault saw its sales rise 13.3 percent on year, Nissan 2.5 percent.
