Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Joo Hyunghwan is testing an EV charger newly added at a big-box outlet in Seoul on Thursday.

Big-box stores, major train stations and multiplex cinemas in South Korea will be installed with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at parking lots as part of the government’s efforts to boost EV use in the country.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy said on Thursday that it will install EV charging stations at 230 large retail establishments such as E-Mart and Homeplus and 10 train stations, allowing parked EVs to recharge while their drivers shop, watch movie, and go about their affairs.

The ministry plans to further increase the supply of EV charging stations at retailers and theaters that can help both EV demand and retail businesses.

Separately, the Ministry of Environment will add 10,000 or more EV charging stations across the country to have at least 20,000 EV charging stations available for use by the end of this year. It already has started building 2,450 EV charging stations at apartment complexes nationwide and plans to install at least one EV charging station at every highway rest area within this year.

The charging rate will also be lowered to 174 won ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour from 313 won per kilowatt-hour.
