A wharf complex with accessibility to waterborne traffic and leisure and culture facilities will be built by 2019 along the riverbank at Yeouido Hangang Park near Yeouinaru Subway Station in Seoul.

Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on Thursday a blueprint to refurbish the riverbank in the manmade island that is home to the National Assembly and media and financial organizations in the Korean capital with a wharf, exhibition and cultural spaces.

The facilities will cover 13,500 square meters of the area and constructed at a cost of 193.1 billion won ($168.5 million). The city government proposes to pull in 59.6 billion won from the state subsidy, 59.6 billion won from city coffers, and the rest 73.9 billion won from the private sector.

Yeouinaru section will be an integrated wharf in Seoul where vessel entry and clearance can be controlled for cruise ships, government vessels, marine taxis and private yachts at one place.

The area will bring together marine leisure facilities which are scattered alongside the Han River.

A 2,100 square meter observatory will also be built in the upper river area to give visitors a panoramic view of the river.

Seoul Metropolitan Government will hold an international competition for the design. The winner will be awarded a cash prize of 100 million won and an execution design right.

The application is available on the website at http://project.seoul.go.kr from Feb. 9 through Apr. 10, 2017. Entries should be submitted to Seoul Metropolitan Government Public Development Center by May 17.
