The South Korean government opened a center for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in western Seoul in hopes of nurturing it as the nation’s hub for the fast-growing virtual reality marketplace.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning on Friday held an opening ceremony of the Korea Virtual Reality - Augmented Reality Complex (KoVAC) at Sangam Digital Media City center in western Seoul.

The KoVAC is composed of two zones - Digital Pavilion and VR support center. The Digital Pavilion houses a studio for live broadcasting of virtual reality shows, a virtual and augmented reality experience center, and a laboratory (VR Lab) where professionals in the related fields will be leading various projects. The ministry will also run an education center with a goal to cultivate at least 2,200 young talents by 2020.

The VR support center will be used as offices for startups and small-sized firms in the field of virtual and augmented reality. Already 18 firms including Venta VR have opened their offices in the center. The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) also has its R&D lab in the center.

The science ministry plans to invite additional 50 or more promising startups in the virtual and augmented reality industry to the KoVAC and increase the number of government-led VR labs to 20 from current 6 by 2020.
